Welcome to Backstage

Dear Music Lovers,
Welcome to Backstage Boutique Townhouse, a concept that was conceived as a creative hub for people who are artistic and passionate about music, travel, history, culture and life itself. The concept was created with the intention in mind that people who write music could stay at Backstage and get more inspired to write great material. If for example you lost your muse, Backstage would help you to get it back. Backstage is a concept created by the property’s owner, Kristina Casolani, a Maltese singer and songwriter.

About the Townhouse

Backstage is an 18th century baroque townhouse converted in 2016 and opening its doors in May 2017. Previously it was the home to a Maltese-Italian family who were also artists. The Reception area was their Art Gallery and Art Shop. When we first saw the house in 2015 we immediately fell in love with the structure and refused to abuse of it in any way. Hence why we did not touch the building structurally. We wanted it to remain true to its original creation, that of 200 years ago. The house always had a very positive vibe and good energy which you may still feel at present. Underlying the house is a World War II Shelter which eventually we wish to turn into a recording studio. Our dream is to be able to give the opportunity to any musicians visiting us to create music at Backstage in their respective rooms and then record their piece of art in the recording studio which would be located in the old war shelter.

The decor at Backstage is music themed throughout. Backstage is centrally located, 200 metres to the Sliema Ferries with all its shops, bars, pubs and al fresco restaurants. It’s five minutes away from Valletta, Malta’s beautiful capital city via ferry or ten minutes away by bus. All rooms at Backstage enjoy free WIFI, multi-lingual satellite TV including the latest Blockbuster movies, air conditioning, a lovely balcony or terrace and a private shower room. All showers are private but not all of them are ensuite since this is a typical 200 year old Maltese townhouse and we left the design in its original concept in order for our guests to experience and embrace the true Maltese culture.

  • Everything was perfect, especially location in Sliema! Felt like someone is taking care of us all the time. We had Louis Armstrong room – that was just coolest room ever! Highly recommend!

  • This place is wonderful and among the best I’ve ever stayed! Helpful staff, fabulous decor, amazing roof terrace, great facilities and lots of little extras to make you feel welcome example: snuggly bathrobes and prosecco. Perfect location too – really close to ferries, buses (including the airport bus) and tourist buses/boats. I can’t fault it at all!

  • Cozy, comfy and lovely. Fantastic guesthouse with an original decoration and great aesthetics. The room Marilyn is a must. The staff is great and gives you very helpful tips. Everything makes you feel at home as if you’re staying with old friends. The location is excellent, 3 minutes from the ferries that connect to Valleta (very beautiful trip) and close to bars and restaurants with quality food and good prices.

  • Kristina is a wonderful host and her staff were very attentive. The boutique is well placed for a short walk downhill to the bus and ferry terminals. ANd a short walk. 10-15 minutes on the opposite direction to st Julian’s bay. Kristina has made the most use out of a house that was potentially a small building and has been designed with a lot of thought to maximise space. Would really like to thank her for our stay.

  • Perfect affordable property in a great location. Such a unique property that has been recently updated and is spotlessly clean. It has everything you need for a stay in Sliema at a much more affordable price in comparison to the hotels in the area. Very convenient location with the bus, ferry and many choices of restaurants/bars within a few minutes walk. (Plus I felt very safe in the neighbourhood which was important to me as I was a solo female traveler.) Kristina, and her staff, are very friendly and full of helpful suggestions. I would stay here again without hesitation if I’m fortunate enough to make it back to Malta.
